Nursery School Staff Charged For Manslaughter

Three years after allegedly causing the death of a child in her care due to her negligence, a former teacher of a private school in Lagos, Rukayat Amisu has been remanded in prison as she faces a one count charge of manslaughter.

The verdict was delivered by Justice Adebayo Akintoye of the Lagos high court sitting at Igbosere and, Lagos State. The accused allegedly committed the offence at Olab Private School, 11 Idowu Street, Victoria Island, in October 2015.

Rukayat, who has entered a not guilty plea, was alleged to have sat three-year old Aliyah Ahmed on top of an unsecured container full of scalding hot water. The container cover accidentally became upended and the child fell into the water.

The case has however been adjourned to the 9th of March, two days after the governorship and house of assembly elections, when the presiding judge will rule on the bail application entered by counsel to the accused.
