Ramadan 2019 Commences May 6

An announcement has been made confirming the date for the start of Ramadan 2019.

Green Lane Masjid and Community Centre in Small Heath, Birmingham, said tonight: “The moon has been sighted, therefore Ramadan will start on Monday, May 6.

“Taraweeh prayers will begin tonight – Sunday, May 5 – at 10.15pm”.

The moon was seen at Mecca, Saudi Arabia, with many Muslim communities around the world following those sightings.

The Saudi Gazette tweeted: “Ramadan crescent sighted on Sunday evening at Hotat Sudair Observatory in Al-Majma’ah, heralding the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan in Saudi Arabia on Monday, May 6, 2019.”

The United Arab Emirates also announced that Ramadan would begin on Monday.

A UAE moon sighting committee convened on Sunday evening at Abu Dhabi Judicial Department and spotted the crescent moon, which marks the beginning of a new month.

Meanwhile, in Nigeria, the Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar III, has also declared Monday, May 6, as the 1st Ramadan, 1440H, signifying the commencement of the annual long-month fast by Muslims.
