Family Buries FUOYE Student Amidst Tears (VIDEO)

One of the students killed during Tuesday’s protest by students of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Dada Kehinde, was on Thursday buried amidst tears by family members and friends.

The students protested in Oye Ekiti over unstable power supply in the institution, leading to attack on Erelu Fayemi while on an empowerment and advocacy tour to engage with women in the local government area.

The students were said to have engaged the security operatives attached to the First Lady in a clash with two persons reportedly killed with several wounded and over a dozen vehicles vandalised by the students.

TheLagostimes gathered that the students’ protest turned violent after a police officer, said to be among those attached to Mrs Fayemi’s convoy, slapped the students’ union president.

The other students protested the slap of their leader and attacked the police officer.

The police then fired gunshots to disperse the protesters and in the process shot some of the students, two of whom died.

A video posted by a twitter user revealed the sombre atmosphere of fellow students, friends and family members of the killed 100-level student of Crop Science and Horticulture.

Footage of the church funeral service posted on social media showed a relative of the deceased standing beside the coffin as he sang a dirge.

Meanwhile, the President of the SUG, Oluwaseun Awodola, said the police shot dead Kehinde and Okonofua, a 300-level student of Biology Education.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Caleb Ikechukwu had however insisted that the police did not fire shots at the students, saying instead, the undergraduates damaged police vehicles and assaulted officers.

However, the FUOYE Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Soremekun, on Thursday, approved the constitution of an investigative panel to look into the protest and the reported attack on the governor’s wife.
