Citizen of Humanity: Julius Rone and Niger Delta Youths

Julius Rone is a man at odds with convention. From the norm and experience, an individual who has successfully trounced the road less travelled and the harrowing venture of laborious life is expected – permitted even – to stand taller and a great deal wealthier.

Romanticize this narrative with colourful language if you must, but acknowledge that society expects a started-from-the-bottom-now-we-here guy to be a shady, duplicitous and conceited loudmouth. After all, Lord Acton said that “great men are almost always bad men”. But almost always is the truth that Rone embodies.

Not too long ago, Julius Rone celebrated his 45th birthday, which is not difficult to believe considering his youthful appearance, sunny disposition and all-round charm. What many will find a tart pill of truth to swallow is his achievements and attainments so far.

Perhaps the most recognized creation of Julius Rone is the company that occupies a top spot in the energy industry, UTM Group. Recently, Exxon Mobil praised UTM Dredging Limited as an established provider of premium marine logistics. What about the Stanford Buzzard – UTM’s vessel – which was awarded the most reliable vessel among the fleet of oil and gas boats?

But maybe these achievements are down to his ensemble of first-rate operatives. There’s more. Just over a year now, George Weah personally extended a convivial invitation to Rone and his lovely wife, Utibe as guests to his inauguration as President of Liberia. This type of honour accompanies fortitude, integrity, virtuosity and foresight. But again, that is not all. This billionaire is also a fierce lover, as evidenced in his public displays of affection for his wife. But this boss has not always been this glam – he was a drab Delta boy once.

The Delta-born magnate is a Superman to the youths of the Niger Delta because he is one of them. He was bitten by the same riverine insects as they are, and fought the ‘area-boy’ reputation as they do. And so when he plays ‘Father Christmas’ to the less-privileged, it is because he has been where they are, and his magnanimity has the pecking orders of corporate vultures.

Today, Julius Rone is not only recognized for his poise or possessions. Rather, it is that altruistic temperament which has helped him steer the youths of his region towards better living through education and employment. Las las, Warri no go carry last – thanks to Rone.
