Twitter Agog As Nigerians React To President Buhari’s ‘Major General’ Title
Reactions have continued to trail Punch Newspaper’s editorial published on Wednesday 11th December, 2019.
Since the news of the editorial broke out on social media, Nigerians have taken to micro-blogging site, Twitter to state their views on the decision of Punch Newspapers to address president Mohammadu Buhari as ‘Major General’.
In the editorial titled “Buhari’s lawlessness: Our stand” which has gone viral, Punch took a position to henceforth refer to President Muhammadu Buhari’s government as a regime and restore his military title of Major-General as a military dictator.
Thelagostimes had earlier reported that the Special adviser on media and publicity to President Mohammadu Buhari, Femi Adeshina, while reacting to the editorial, dismissed Punch’s stance. According to him, calling the president ‘Major General’ is not out of order.
“If you decide to call him Major General, he wasn’t dashed the rank, he earned it. So, you are not completely out of order. The fact that you can do so is even another testimony to press freedom in Nigeria,” Adesina tweeted this morning.
Meanwhile, Nigerians who took to twitter have pitched their tent with Punch newspapers, supporting Punch’s decision.

Dear Nigerians, welcome back to 1984.
It's a rare privilege initiated by Punch Time Machine to go back in time to see for yourself the regime of General Buhari as a Major General, and learn how to connect people's past to their future before making critical decisions and choice. pic.twitter.com/VUhyiWwNwH

My attention has been drawn to the fact that @MobilePunch has unveiled Buhari's new Home kit Jersey for this season
"Major General Buhari Rtd"
The new jersey reflects his old club tradition of reckless tackles on Human Rights and Unbeaten record of Tyranny.
