STREET POP : HOW THE SUDDEN RISE OF SLIMCASE MAY AFFECT OLAMIDE’S LONG REIGN
Since Olamide’s “Eni Duro” and the “Rapsodi” album was released in 2011, the Bariga born musician had grown to become one of the biggest Nigerian musicians in the Wizkid and Davido era.
2011 was the same year Terry G – the best street music star at the time – released his hit song “Akpako Master.” Other hit songs released that year included “Dami Duro” by Davido, D’banj’s “Oliver Twist,” “Superstar” by Ice Prince, “Love Me” by Tiwa Savage, and “Pakurumo” by Wizkid.
But Olamide was different. He raps. He sings. And he also knows when to introduce new dance moves, which is one of the major tricks that shows he got the street in his hands.
After Olamide’s breakthrough, Terry G’s buzz continue to dwindle in the fast growing industry with new emerging stars almost every month.
Then there was Small Doctor who made his debut with “Mosquito Killer” in 2015, and the Agege born singer has not failed to impress die-hard street music fans. He’s proceeded to have shows in countries across world.
Olamide’s fan base is the street and Small Doctor managed to win many hearts in the same circle, but he still can’t be compared to the “WO” hitmaker.
But in 2017 when the Nigerian music fans needed something new, Slimcase and Mr. Real came through. D’banj was quick to feature both artistes on his viral song, “Issa Banger,” released in January.
Mr. Real had made his debut with “Legbegbe” featuring a host of rising musicians that include, Idowest, Obadice and Kevin Chuks.
But Slimcase who has been around for awhile had his major breakthrough in the industry with his collaboration with DJ Sidez on “Oshozondi”, followed with “Burundi Tash” with DJ Preddy.
However, his debut songs “Majeomo” and “Oh Baby” were only more popular in Lagos areas like Orile, Mushin, Surulere, and Agege.
What Slimcase has in common with Olamide and Small Doctor include the street style and sound. But his unique slangs is the reason why he’s the most wanted man on every artistes list for this year.
“I have brought a new sound from the street to the industry. People just like the way I do my thing because in my songs, you cannot easily decipher if I am singing or talking. They just love the uniqueness of my style. Everyone is doing well in their own lane. I just thank God for where I am today,” Slimcase said in an interview.
It is safe to say the factory-worker-turned-musician is presently the new voice of the street, and his bank account now read millions.
Slimcase is inarguably the Nigerian artist with most collaborations in the first quarter of 2018. He’s collaborated with notables stars including Tiwa Savage, Reminisce, D’banj, Yemi Alade, DJ Xclusive, and Wizkid, his new friend.
Some critics say Slimcase can’t break into the global music market just yet, but the African market is very possible, but that’s a lot of work for the rave of the moment.
Olamide successfully overshadowed Small Doctor when he suddenly became a threat to his street buzz, but would he be able to stop Slimcase?
