Economic Hardship: NLC Begins Nationwide Protests
Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) are currently staging a nationwide protest over the economic hardship in the country.
Channelstv reports that the NLC and Federal Government authorities had met Monday in a late push to stop the protests, but the meeting ended with no agreement reached between the parties.
As early as 7:00 am, protesters reportedly gathered in different parts of the country, bearing placards and putting on the paraphernalia of the NLC.
Some of the states observing the protest are: Lagos, Taraba, Oyo, Sokoto, and Abia.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State was said to have addressed the protesters in Ibadan. Also, in Lagos, some policemen were seen distributing water and biscuits to protesters.
The NLC and the Trade Union Congress had, on February 8, issued a 14-day nationwide strike notice to the Federal Government over the failure to implement the agreements reached on October 2, following the removal of the fuel subsidy.
According to the unions, the FG’s failure to fulfill its promises after the ultimatum by Labour will be met with a two-day nationwide protest, slated for today (Tuesday), February 27, and Wednesday, February 28.
