Cholera Outbreak And Ileya Meat by Victor Ganzallo
There is never a good time for there to be an outbreak of any form of disease but the recent reported cases of the cholera disease call for concern, especially at a festive period known for feasting and general sharing of food and drinks.
The recent reported cases of the disease in Lagos, with attendant fatalities, calls for concern and caution, especially at a time we are celebrating Eid Kabir, the Muslim festival where ram and other animals are slaughtered and shared, either raw or cooked.
The Lagos State Government through the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi had earlier in the week disclosed that about 60 cases of cholera disease were reported in the state, with 5 deaths already recorded.
According to him, the disease is highly contagious and areas with poor water treatment and sanitation are at a higher risk. The recent heavy downpour and flooding are some of the other reasons that have been cited for the recent surge in the disease.
The Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu government has been particular about riding Lagos State of slums and shanties, whilst mounting a major campaign against the blockade of drainages and canal channels and this recent outbreak further lend credence to the fact that the many initiatives embarked upon by the state through its Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, headed by Mr. Tokunbo Wahab is indeed a good step in the right direction.
Slums, shanties and other illegally occupied spaces are locations where people are at a very high risk of cholera and what the government is doing to safeguard lives can be seen to be seeing and thinking ahead.
As we celebrate the Sallah festival with our Muslim families, friends, colleagues and associates, it’s important that we pay premium attention to our hygiene, especially washing our hands with soap and clean water regularly, especially before eating, preparing food and using the toilet and following food safety guidelines.
Stay safe and have a cholera free Eid al-Adha!
