Motorists Plead Government Intervention As Flood Takes Over Ijaiye Housing Estate, Agege

It was a sight to behold as flood took over the road diverting motorists coming from Ogba/Oba Ogunji through Ijaiye Low Cost Housing Estate to link Iju Road.

Thelagostimes reports that the flood was as a result of the heavy downpour on Wednesday morning. As at when Thelagostimes got to the scene, a lot of vehicles had broken-down as ‘danfo’ and ‘Keke’ drivers struggled to take their vehicles from the road. This caused a lot of traffic gridlock in the area.

Speaking with Thelagostimes, a bus driver who identified himself as Wasiu disclosed that the area is usually flooded anytime it rains. He stated that the flooding is as a result of the lack of drainage systems in the estate.

“Since the government started constructing the Pen-Cinema flyover, they diverted all vehicles to this place. So, this road is now a major road but this flood is a big problem for us, especially we drivers. Anytime it rains, this place is always terrible. At times, the flood spoils our vehicles.

“If this had happened in the night, the traffic would have been worse than this. We want the government to please do something about it”, he said.

Also, in a brief chat with Thelagostimes, a civil servant who identified herself as Olaleye Fatima said she was already late for work as the ‘Keke Napep’ she boarded was part of the vehicles that broke down.

“This road is terribly bad. As you can see, our keke has broken down. Now, I have to remove shoes and walk through this dirty water. This is really bad. I want Ambode to finish up the flyover so that we won’t have to experience this”, she said.

Also speaking, a resident of the estate who pleaded anonymous said: “This road was not like this before. Ever since vehicles started to ply this road, especially trailers, there have been potholes. The flooding is as a result of the shallow gutters we have here. There is no other passageway for the water to flow”, he said.

Recall that the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Olujimi Hotonu had, in January 2018, announced the traffic diversion routes as a result of the ongoing construction of the Pen Cinema flyover which is expected to be ready by December, 2018.
