Ghosts of Bar Beach: Gallery B57 Announces Blockbuster Show for Inaugural Exhibition

Gallery B57, a new premier art gallery located at 57 Bishop Oluwole, Victoria Island, Lagos, will mark its grand unveiling with two weeks of exhibitions tagged “Colour, the Colourful and the Spectacular”. The exhibition will run from October 28 to November 11, 2018, from 10am to 6pm daily.

Art lovers in and around the metropolis will be treated to “Ghosts of Bar Beach,” by world renowned conceptual artist Ade Adekola. The post-documentary work explores themes of history, memory and nostalgia, centred around the evolving history and significance of the popular Bar Beach on the coast of Victoria Island, Lagos.

The work “explores several aspects of nostalgia from the 1500s with the naming of its environs as ‘Lago du Curamo’; to the 1800s with the British bombardment of Lagos; up to the 1970’s where it was a place of spectacle of death.” The exhibition also touches on its contemporary reality as a little brother playing second fiddle to the fast-rising skylines of Eko Atlantic.

In keeping with Ade Adekola’s highly lauded body of work, the remastered images in this exhibition are presented with their electrifying colours to provide access to moments of nostalgia and memories of Bar Beach moods lost for good. The images do not document specific events but memories of a colourful past. Each image comes alive and creates a spark of resonance, sometimes in a slow meditative and contemplative pace.
