Court Denies OAU ‘Sex-for-marks’ Prof Bail

The federal high court in Osogbo on Tuesday declined the bail application of  Richard Akindele, a former lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

Akindele was arraigned before the court by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on November 19.

He was arraigned on four counts bothering on alteration of age and demanding sex to pass his student.

In an audio which went viral online, Akindele was heard demanding five sessions of sex to award Monica Osagie, a postgraduate student, a pass mark in a course she failed.

Francis Omotoso, counsel to the defendant, filed an application for his bail, but it was opposed by Kehinde Ayantoye, a senior legal officer with the ICPC.

Ayantoye filed a counter affidavit deposed to by a detective, Afolabi Oluwatoyin.

Maureen Onyetenu, the judge, said the allegations contained in the counter affidavit were weighty and directed the prosecution to produce evidence to back his claim. She ordered that the defendant be remanded in prison custody till December 17.

Meanwhile, Akindele was dismissed in June, following investigations into the matter by the governing council of the institution.
