Following the ban of the use of Styrofoam and other single use plastics by the Lagos state government, Nigerian fast-food franchise, Chicken Republic, has encouraged its customers to visit their outlets with their own reusable food containers.

This was contained in a statement released on the social media platforms of the organisation on Monday.

The statement, signed by the Managing Director, Food Concepts Plc, Kofi Abunu, disclosed that customers who want to order online would be charged for the reusable plastic takeaways. The statement further applauded the decision of the state government, adding that it is a significant step in protecting the environment.

“Effective immediately, all our outlets in Lagos will commence the transition from using Styrofoam packs for both walk-in and online orders.

“We encourage our citizens across the state to bring their own reusable containers. In line with our commitment to sustainability, we will charge for reusable plastic takeaway containers henceforth,” the statement reads.

Thelagostimes had earlier reported that the Lagos state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement on Sunday, announced the ban of Styrofoam packs in the state.

According to Wahab, the decision was reached following the menace which the single use plastics, especially the non-biogradeable Styrofoam, was causing on the environment.

He added that most drainage channels in the state are daily clogged up by Styrofoam through its indiscriminate distribution and usage despite the regular cleaning and evacuation of the drains with humongous amounts.
