Goods Worth Millions Destroyed As Fire Engulfs Lagos Plank Market

Goods and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed on Wednesday when a popular Ladipo Plank Market, Amukoko in Orile Iganmu area of Lagos, was engulfed in a midnight fire.

Although the cause of the fire could not be ascertained at press time, an eyewitness said it started at about 12:30a.m.

Confirming the development, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyitolu, disclosed that the agency responded to distress calls, and arrived at the scene to discover that the plank market was engulfed in fire.

He said: “Fortunately, no life was lost. However, goods and property yet to be enumerated were destroyed in the fire.”

Meanwhile, Head of Public Education, Lagos State Fire Service, Mr. Amodu Shakira, said the fire has been put out.

According to him, the fire affected over 300 shops and five lanes in the market.

He said the state had earlier sent representatives to sympathise with traders, who lost their property during the fire outbreak.
