As victims continue to reel in agony of the Lagos Explosion , the extent of destruction recorded during the devastating explosion that hit Amuwo Odofin local government area of Lagos on Sunday morning has begun to filter through to the public.
LagosTimes had reported earlier in the day how residents of the area were thrown in deep tension and scamper for safety after the explosion that reverberated across the length and breadth of the area
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) says over 50 buildings were destroyed in the explosion that rocked the suburb.
Speaking in an interview with NAN, Ibrahim Farinloye, acting coordinator of the Lagos territorial office of NEMA, disclosed that the cause of the incident and casualty figure were currently unknown as “rescue operations are still going on in the affected area”.
He said the resulting fire, from the explosion, later spread to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) oil pipeline passing through the area, although though the pipeline had been shut down as a precautionary measure.
According to him, a combined team of the Lagos State Fire Service, Federal Fire Service and the Nigerian Navy Fire Tender are currently battling to put out the inferno.
Explosion not caused by pipeline vandalism.
Farinloye said contrary to information on some social media platforms, the explosion which occurred around 9am, was unconnected to pipeline vandalism.
“From the information given by officials of the Lagos State Fire Service who are currently on ground, the implosion is not connected to pipeline but might have occurred in a factory located in the Abule Ado area,” he said.
Another online media outfit, TheCable, had reported how students of a boarding school in Abuke Ado were trapped in their dormitory as a result of the explosion.
