Meranda Officially Assumes Office As Lagos Assembly Speaker, Holds Prayer Session

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, officially moved into the Speaker’s office at the Lagos State House of Assembly Complex on Monday.

Videos circulating on social media on Monday showed supporters praising God and praying for her as she assumed office. She was accompanied by the principal members and other lawmakers amidst tight security.

Meranda is the first female Speaker of the House. She assumed the role following the impeachment of the former speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.

Obasa was removed as Lagos speaker on Monday, January 13, 2025, when more than two-thirds of the 40-member house voted him out.

Meanwhile, security has also been beefed up at the Assembly following last Saturday’s news conference by the former speaker, Mudashiru Obasa that his removal did not follow due process and that he would resume on Monday as speaker.
