Nothing Lasts Forever :The Rise and Fall of the Ibru Boys

Fame beckons on the gullible with the promise of euphoric highs unknown to drinkers of cognac or codeine. It is as inviting as the laps of a sultry woman and lulls its victims with dreams of rosy beds and roads paved with the gold of popular acclaim. Only to abandon them in the desert, bare, dry and bereft of the greenery that attended them in their pomp.

Such is the fate of the Ibru boys Oboden and Obaro, born to Oloroogun Michael and Cecelia Ibru. While their father still sat atop the Ibru commercial dynasty and their mother ruled the roost at Oceanic Bank, the Ibru brothers painted the town red with eye-widening extravagance, turning several upscale hangouts into their personal havens of lavish spending and debauchery.

Hailing from a family that has produced a governor, an ambassador, a minister and men of influence aplenty, Obaro Ibru was more than happy to be the black sheep. The handsome hunk spared no thoughts for tomorrow as he lived and enjoyed to the hilt. He left broken hearts and empty bottles in his wake.

While his blood brother Oboden tried to maintain a corporate profile as Oceanic MD Obaro was busy rocking the social scene to the fullest. His stylish steps took him to many a pleasure haunt where he frittered away millions. A coterie of fellow jetsetters swarmed around him like flies eating from the palms of his hand.

However, ever since their mother Cecelia was sent scampering from her post in shame after sinking Oceanic with series of shady dealings, life has turned upside down for the Ibru brothers. While Oboden spent quality time with his mother behind bars before slinking away into his anonymous cocoon, Oboden too has disappeared from the social radar.

Obaro, the one-time party lord and king of nightlife has now become a cautionary tale and the main course in a banquet of high society gossip. He is nowhere to be seen these days and neither is Oboden. Both of them seem to have bid adieu to the limelight and embraced solitude.
