President Bola Tinubu has assured the newly elected president of Ghana, John Mahama, of his support in driving change and economic prosperity for the people of Ghana.

Tinubu stated this during his speech on Tuesday in Accra at the inauguration of the Ghanaian leader.

According to Tinubu, who is also the chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, Nigeria, Ghana and leaders of countries on the African continent must commit themselves to building strong economies to uplift the people.

“It is time that our continent’s critics stopped forgetting the strides that Nigeria and others have made. We need not put ourselves to death.

“We have nothing to prove to anyone except ourselves. We will lift our nations out of poverty and build strong and resilient economies for our people,” the Nigerian leader said.

“Today, I am here not only as the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but also as an African in resolute support of Ghana and her people. This moment is a source of pride and honour for Ghanaians, the entire continent and its diaspora.

“The sun may be out and the sky may be blue but I see today a black star rising, rising high in African sky.

“This black star shines over this nation and its ray spreads across this continent with a sense of shared history, hope, compassion, unity, devotion to our common welfare.

“While others may seem to demean Africa and keep brothers pitting against brothers, that shining star reminds us of who we are; better yet, it reminds us of who we can be. That star reminds us always to strive and work together, bond together,” he said.

Mahama, who was president of Ghana between 2012 and early 2017, stormed back to power after he defeated Mahamudu Bawumia of the then-ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He polled over 50 per cent of the vote cast to coast home to victory.
