The new British Prime Minister, Liz Truss has announced her resignation, six weeks after resuming in office.
According to Washington Post,Truss announced her resignation on Thursday, making her the shortest-serving prime minister in British history.
Truss revealed that a new prime minister will be selected by her Conservative Party lawmakers in the coming week. However, the process by which the decision will be made remains unclear.
It was gathered that the party is bitterly divided by warring centrist and right-wing factions, and there is no clear consensus candidate to take over.
Speaking outside her Downing Street office on Thursday, Truss accepted that she could not deliver the promises she made when she was running for Conservative leader, having lost the faith of her party.
“I recognise though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party,” she said.
She added that she would remain as prime minister until a successor has been chosen, which is expected to be completed within the next week.
