Court Orders FG To Pay Sunday Igboho N20bn In Damages

An Oyo State High court has ordered the Federal Government to pay Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, a.k.a. Sunday Igboho, the sum of N20 billion.

Justice Ladiran Akintola awarded the sum on Friday while delivering judgement in a N500 billion suit, filed against the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami and the Department of State Services (DSS) for what was described as exemplary and aggravated damage done against the activist.

Justice Ladiran said the judgment would serve a lesson to Government agencies who are fond of infringing on the fundamental human rights of citizens.

Sunday Adeyemo had earlier filed a 500 billion naira compensation from the Federal Government for infringing on his fundamental human rights. Igboho, through his lawyer, Yomi Alliyu, had filed the suit challenging the invasion of his house in Ibadan on July 1, damage of his property as a violation of his fundamental right to peacefully own property and wealth by operatives of the DSS.

Counsel to Sunday Igboho, Yomi Aliu while reacting to this said the judgement by the court was fair and historical in the history of Nigerian democracy.
