#EndSARS: Heavy Gridlock As Protesters Block Lekki-Epe Toll Gate
Many Lagosians protesting the high handedness of the police unit, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), have laid siege at the Lekki toll gate, along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
This is coming hours after the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad on Sunday.
The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu on Sunday afternoon, announced the disbandment of the police unit.
Adamu said a new policing arrangement to replace the now-defunct police unit would be announced “in due course”, adding that all officers of the disbanded SARS have been redeployed with “immediate effect”.
However, on Monday, the protesters grounded vehicular traffic along the Lekki expressway to a halt.
Punch reports that the protesters are demanding that police authorities carry out psychological evaluation and re-training of all disbanded SARS officers before they are redeployed.
They are also demanding the release of all arrested protesters, justice for all deceased victims of police brutality and appropriate compensation for their families.
They also want increased salaries for police officers as well as the establishment of an independent body to oversee the investigation and prosecution of all reports of police misconduct within 10 days.
Meanwhile, thelagostimes gathered that a lot of motorists who were on their way to work were stranded as all roads were blocked. A lot of them reportedly turned back home because of the massive traffic.
