Kuje Prison Attack: Over 300 Inmates Escape, Properties Destroyed

Following the attack at the Kuje Custodial Centre, Federal Capital Territory on Tuesday, over 300 inmates have reportedly escaped.

A prison source who spoke to Vanguard under the condition of anonymity confirmed that over 300 persons inmates escaped during the attack by the gunmen.

The source claimed the attackers used bombs to forcibly gain control of four entry and exit points.

“They operated for over 2 hours and 45 minutes more than; took over the Kuje prison with GPMGs, bombs, RPGs, many rifles”, the source was quoted to have said.

Recall that a group of terrorists on Tuesday night attacked the Kuje Medium Custodial Centre in Abuja, the nation’s capital with bombs in an apparent move to gain entry into the facility and free some of its members.

It was gathered that dangerous criminals, including apprehended Boko Haram terrorists, are held in the prison. The prison also houses high profile public officers standing trial or already convicted.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, AD Umar, confirmed that gunmen had attacked the correctional centre but revealed that normalcy had been restored after security agencies intervened.

“I wish to confirm that about 2200hrs, some yet to be identified gunmen attacked the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kuje in the Federal Capital Territory,” Umar said.

“However, men of the Armed Squad of the Nigerian Correctional Service and other security agencies attached to the Custodial centre have responded and calm has been restored to the facility and the situation is under control.

“Details will be made available soon”, he said.
