Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway On Lock down As Violence Erupts Between Hausa, Yoruba Traders

Lagos-Abeokuta expressway came to a standstill on Sunday following a clash between Yoruba and Hausa traders at Oke-Odo market situated along the expressway.

Movements, especially Vehiclar activities, were seriously hampered. Vehicles going to Lagos from Sango in Ogun state and those moving to Abule-Egba from Oshodi and other parts of the were trapped.

A resident that spoke with TheCable said that trouble began last night when traders at the market where food items were sold clashed over an unknown issue.

The situation reportedly worsen on Sunday morning and matters came to a head when furious traders started burning wares and make-shift stalls.

Security operatives are trying to bring the situation under control and restore peace and sanity to the market.

Bala Elkana, police public relations officer in Lagos, said there was no cause for alarm as they had that the situation under control.

“It started as a fight between Hausa scavengers and some cultists known as Awawa boys that almost snowballed into ethnic crisis,” he said.

“Our timely intervention brought the situation under control and stopped the crisis from escalating. Normalcy has since been restored. Patrols are ongoing in the affected areas. No casualty figure available yet. We are investigating the cause of the fight.”
