Real Madrid have now won more Champions Leagues than European Cups
Zinedine Zidane has achieved incredible success since he took over as the coach of Real Madrid, and after Saturday’s victory Los Blancos now have won more Champions League titles than European Cups.
The format and guise of the tournament changed in 1993 into the Champions League, however, the Spanish giants won the tournament six times prior to that date.
Alfredo Di Stefano characterised an era at the club as they won five successive European Cups from between 1956 and 1960, and the sixth followed in 1966.
Then came a thirty two year wait for another success in Europe’s premier club competition before Jupp Heynckes took charge of a team that defeated Juventus in Amsterdam.
Pedja Mijatovic scored the decisive goal on that occasion, furthering Real Madrid’s famous affiliation with the tournament after years of English and Italian dominance.
Further glories then came in 2000 and 2002 before another disappointing 12-year wait.
Atletico Madrid were the opponents in Lisbon and the Decima dream became a reality, taking Los Blancos’ tally of Champions League titles to four.
Their scarcely believable success since then has seen Zidane change the club’s history, and whilst the European champions have often been linked with the European Cup, they’ve now been more successful in the modern era.
