Senate Approves State Of Emergency In Rivers

The Senate has approved President Bola Tinubu’s proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

This is coming hours after the House of Representatives approved the declaration.

The resolution was taken at Thursday’s closed-door session of the legislators to deliberate on the declaration and the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, Ngozi Odu, and other elected officials.

Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, had read a letter from President Tinubu at plenary on Thursday.

In giving the approval, the Senate said the emergency rule should not exceed six months.

The Senate further resolved that the president should establish an ad hoc committee composed of “eminent” Nigerians to mediate between the warring factions in Rivers State.
