Funke Akindele’s ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ Becomes First Nollywood Film To Hit N1bn

Nigerian actress Funke Akindele’s new movie titled ‘A Tribe Called Judah’, has become the first Nollywood film to surpass N1 billion at the box office.

Dailypost reports that FilmHouse Group CEO, Kene Okwuosa, who announced the historical feat in a statement on Thursday, noted that the world is witnessing a golden era for Nigerian cinema.

According to the statement, the movie earned N1 billion in three weeks after it was released.

“Akindele’s film has not only captivated audiences but has also proven the resilience of Nigerian cinema in the face of global streaming giants like Netflix and Prime Video,” the statement added.

Also confirming this feat, the renowned Nollywood actress and producer of the movie, Funke Akindele, posted the milestone on her Instagram page via a flyer.

In her post, she wrote: “Thank You LORD!!!, Thank NIGERIA!! Thank you GHANA!!”

‘A Tribe Called Judah’ became the first Nollywood movie to gross over N113 million in its opening weekend after it was released on December 15 2023, in cinemas.

This achievement surpasses Akindele’s previous films such as ‘Battle on Buka Street’ (N668.4 million) and ’Omo Ghetto’ (N636.1 million), which currently rank as the second and third highest-grossing films in the Nigerian box office, respectively.
