FAAN To Raise Passenger Service Charge By 100%

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is set to increase the passenger service charges on domestic and international flight tickets by 100 per cent from August 1, 2020.

The service charge is collected by airlines from passengers passing through Nigerian airports, and remitted to FAAN.

In a June 22, 2020 letter signed by the agency’s managing director, Rabiu Yadudu, the old N1,000 charge for domestic flights will increase to N2000, while the $50 charge for international flights will increase to $100.

According to a report by TheCable, Yadudu appealed to airlines in the letter to support the agency in the implementation of the review.

He said the current rates, reviewed in 2011, are outdated, and that the new rates will help FAAN to improve and upgrade airports infrastructure.

“This increase will afford FAAN the needed funds to upgrade our facilities to accommodate new airlines including the anticipated national carrier,” he said.

FAAN spokesperson, Henrietta Yakubu, told TheCable that the review is still a proposal, but Yadudu stated in his letter that it could become effective from August 1.

He noted that the rates are premised on the approval given by the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, in a letter dated August 3, 2017.
