Ogun Senators, Osoba, Former Speaker in Free-for-All Fight
Decorum was thrown away on Wednesday as fight broke out at the appeal hearing session of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ogun State chapter in Abeokuta when loyalists of Governor Ibikunle Amosun and those of former governor, Chief Segun Osoba, came face to face.
Those involved in the fracas were Senator Gbenga Kaka, representing Ogun East Senatorial District; Senator Gbenga Obadara, representing Ogun Central Senatorial District; Tunji Egbetokun, former speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly; Honourable Olumide Osoba, a serving legislator and son of Chief Segun Osoba; Solomon Ogunde, a local council chairman; and Onadeko Onamusi, a former federal lawmaker.
The session assumed a violent turn when Egbetokun, the Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Affairs, stood up and raised a point of order challenging Senator Gbenga Kaka (who was addressing the appeal panel) for allegedly being rude to Governor Amosun.
Egbetokun remained on his feet insisting that he should be granted audience by the panel. His posture caused some supporters of Osoba to rise and rush towards him (Egbetokun). In defence, those in Egbetokun’s camp engaged those in Osoba’s camp in blows, forcing the session to end abruptly.
Egbetokun attempted to unleash blows on Olumide Osoba but he was prevented by a former Onadeko, who got injured in the process.
The ensuing melee saw party faithful, including members of the state congress committee and the appeal committee scamper for safety inside the Gateway Hall, venue of the event.
APC Ogun State has been embroiled in factional crises for some time, and two factions each led by Governor Amosun and Osoba have been involved in bitter feud in their bid to control the party structure in the state. The situation led to parallel wards and local government congresses recently, which led the Alhaji Iqra Ibliss-led appeal committee to come to state to hear the petitions arisen from the wards and local government congresses.
